Fall Pool Closing Tips for Palm Beach and Broward County Pool Owners

Tips for Closing Your Pool This Fall in Palm Beach and Broward County

With the weather turning, is your South Florida pool calling for some seasonal work? One sees more debris in the water of late. And for those who have an open pool all year, “closing” it can be a bit of a mystery.

You are not the only one with such questions. We at PB Pool Doc, LLC put them to rest for residential owners in Palm Beach and Broward County, making sure the equipment is in good order and the water is clean come what season. Give us a ring at (561) 934-5597.

A fall in South Florida is not like up north. For the most part homeowners here will not be putting a cover on their pool as they would in a colder state. But do not make the mistake of thinking the season can be overlooked; there are things to be done before winter sets in with the change in weather.

A Different Kind of “Closing” in South Florida

Elsewhere in the country you will find pools being covered and the lines drained and winterized with chemicals. Our winters are too mild for that, allowing the pool to be used through the year.

In a way it is less of a chore. On the other hand the pool does not get a proper respite so one must be diligent with its care even when it is cooler. The approach in Palm Beach and Broward County this time of year is more a matter of altering your routine than shutting down.

Dealing with Debris

There is no escaping the leaves, pollen and organic material that make their way into the water in fall, warm climate or not. Left to it, that kind of debris will upset your water chemistry in short order.

We recommend you do the following:

  • Make a habit of skimming off the surface to keep leaves from sinking
  • Be about emptying the pump and skimmer baskets with greater frequency
  • Put some brush to the walls and floor to stop any accumulation in the corners
  • See if leaves on the plaster have left a stain
  • Look for grime on the tile and water line
  • Do some trimming on plants in the vicinity of the pool

It is the best way to safeguard your equipment and the quality of the water.

When Temperatures Change, So Does the Chemistry

Chemicals do not always hold up the same in cooler water and with a different bather load. Regular testing will put an end to any guesswork and nip imbalances in the bud before you are left with algae or cloudy water. A visit from our team includes all standard pool chemicals and we will follow up with an email containing photos and test results so you are in the know.

An Eye on the Equipment

The pumps, filters and heaters have put in hard work over the swimming months, so a once over in the fall is prudent.

Before the season changes we suggest you:

  • Put the pump and filter to the test for odd noises or leaks
  • Backwash or clean the filter
  • If you intend to swim in the cooler weeks, run a check on the heater
  • Examine o-rings, gaskets and seals for signs of wear
  • Make sure your automation and timers are properly set

Should you come across something that requires some work, leave it to our in-house department for the repairs or an upgrade. You will not have to deal with outside contractors or the like.
